This article describes five low cost/no cost attractions in the enchanting city of Vienna. As a solo tourist or traveling as a family, these selections will give you a great taste of the city without emptying your wallet and make you a resourceful traveler.

Vienna has been called the “City of Music” due to its musical legacy as many famous classical musicians such as Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart lived and worked there.

Vienna, the capital city of Austria, is renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, stunning architecture and vibrant arts scene. It is a great city to visit. Ultimately, if you are interested in history, culture, architecture, and culinary delights, Vienna will likely offer a rewarding travel experience.

  1. Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral)

You can enter the main part of this iconic 12th-century cathedral for free and admire its Gothic architecture and atmospheric interior. Only guided tours, the towers, museum and catacombs require paid admission.

2. Free Walking Tours

Several companies like Vienna Greeters and Good Vienna Tours offer free guided walking tours around the city’s historic center and top attractions. You simply tip the guide what you can afford, usually around €10–15.

3. Schönbrunn Palace Gardens

While the Schönbrunn Palace requires an entry fee, you can explore its vast, beautifully landscaped gardens for free. The gardens offer great views of the palace and are open daily.

4. Naschmarkt

Without any cost, this lively open-air market is a great place to browse stalls selling fresh produce, street food and local goods . Many vendors offer free samples too.

5. Vienna State Opera House (Wiener Staatsoper)

Built in the 19th century Renaissance style, the Vienna State Opera is one of the world’s leading opera houses. Visitors can take guided tours of the opulent interior or attend performances of opera and ballet.

Other budget options mentioned include the Ringstrasse walking route, the Burggarten and Stadtpark gardens, churches like Peterskirche and viewpoints like the South Tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral for a small fee.
